SETTING THE RECORD STRAIGHT: Miscellaneous other fake news

We will put responses to other various items of fake news or false and defamatory claims here.

Carl Coffey and 'Soldier of Light'
There is a story going around that we cannot detemine was started by Carl, that he wrote a version of our C64 game 'Soldier of Light' but was never paid for it. This is nonsense as Carl knows. He sent us a demo that looked very good but when we tried to explore his coding an actual C64 version of the game he confessed that was beyond his skills. Which is a pity since the demo was impressive. But Edge never agreed to pay Carl anything and he thus did not fail to receive any payment from us. That was fake news spread to make Edge and its CEO Tim Langdell look bad.

Published C64 'Soldier of Light' by Ian and Mic Jones
There is a fake story going around that because Carl Coffey couldn't develop this version of SoL, that the people who did the conversion (Ian and Mic) had a compressed time frame in which to do it. This isn't true, they had the time to do it that they claimed they needed. What we did not anticipate is just how truly bad their conversion was going to be. Even though it was very disappointing, we took a commercial decision to publish it -- and frankly we have questioned that decision ever since. But Ian and Mic were paid in full for programming the game. Stories have emerged that Ian and Mic were not paid and that they took out a law suit against Edge. But that simply never happened. There was no dispute over payment and certainly no law suit. That was yet another fake story invented around the time Papazian at Mobigame was inventing all the other fake stories about Tim Langdell being a 'trademark troll' when that clearly was not true. The other part of the fake story--that Edge and Langdell had gone to America to avoid the lawsuit, is clearly nonsense. We have retained offices in London at all times since 1991, so there has never been any sense which Ian and Mic couldn't find us to sue us ... and anyway, the story falsely says they did sue us .. which is confusing. In short - there never was any dispute with Ian or Mic, there was no lawsuit, no one left for America to avoid anything, and Ian and Mic were paid in full for what they did. The version was, though, rather appalling. (Robert Whitaker's graphics were pretty good though - we are not criticizing Robert's work).
